Experimental Sounds Rooted in Isaan Culture

Plern Vern is a music collective deeply engaged with the intersections of art and culture — particularly the musical traditions of northeastern Thailand (Isaan). Formed in 2021 by Tawmayui (Pongsak Wansri) and Luangkhet (Sutthiphong Sutsang), the duo are Thai artists born and raised in the cultural landscape of Isaan.

Their shared curiosity about the roots of Isaan music — especially its ceremonial and spiritual aspects — forms the foundation of their work. They draw inspiration from music once central to rituals, spirits, deities, soul-calling, and various offerings. As these traditions slowly fade from mainstream practice, Plern Vern steps in to reimagine them through sound experimentation, electronic instruments, improvisation, and soundscapes — blending old worlds with new sonic forms.

Background and Formation

Tawmayui and Luangkhet first met while studying music at the same institution. Pongsak Wansri (aka Tawmayui) is a mor khaen (bamboo mouth organ) player who has performed at traditional ceremonies such as Thean, Mamot, and Molam since childhood. He is also a current member of the band Klee Bro.

Sutthiphong Sutsang (aka Luangkhet) comes from a visual arts background, with a strong interest in the relationship between images and sound. His practice focuses on soundscapes, experimental music, and sound art. Over time, he became a co-producer for Plern Vern, helping shape their unique approach to using traditional Isaan folk music as a base for experimental sonic exploration.

Plern Vern’s debut performance wasn’t just the result of these two artists alone. Their first live show in 2021 at Jap Hu Chon Pak also featured Teerawat Wisuma (Theer) from the band Flowerpeaple, who joined as co-producer for the event.
